I came across this article the other day written by Jason Ferruggia. It’s titled 53 ways to build muscle, gain strength and be f*ckin awesome. He goes on to give tips on what you should do in order to achieve these things.
For example, Always squeeze the bar as hard as you can.
This is a great tip. If you have ever done overhead triceps extensions, chances are you may keep your grip, forearms and biceps relaxed. Instead, try squeezing the bar hard.
Your entire arm will tense up. Not only will those muscles be working, but they will help stabilize the arm and shoulder.
Here’s another one, Do more moving and supporting on your hands.
If you do some research on hand stands, you’ll probably find that they used to be used very often in school gyms and they are still used extensively in gymnastics training. Why? Because they work.
Not only do they work the shoulders, but the core strength required to hold yourself in position will help build some good old fashioned core power.
And one more, Do more exercises standing than sitting or lying down.
I couldn’t agree with this more. The body is meant to work at as a unit. By lying down or sitting you remove part of it’s stability. Take for example a barbell military press.
If you are sitting down, you will need to use less weight than if you’re standing. You’ll most likely also need some help.
If you’re standing, you can clean and press the weight overhead and do your presses. When you’re done you just place it back down on the floor.
