Sand Bag lifting and Minimizing Strength Work

Navy Sea Bag

Navy Sea Bag

Today I picked up my sea bag and did a quick 20  reps of picking it up off of the floor and putting it on my shoulders. I alternated shoulders each rep. I forgot what a great exercise this was. It’s been a while since I did them. I used to add them to the end of each bodyweight FUN-damental circuit.

The more I trim away at my workouts I find that I end up going back to what I used to do. A lot of body movements. It just makes sense and I feel my body getting faster and more agile every day.

Portion sizes: Do they matter?

If you look on pretty much every package of food there is a nutrition facts label. On that label there is a breakdown of how many calories per serving, fat, carbs and protein content. Depending on what it is, there may also be vitamin levels shown. There is also a serving size. The serving size is not really a recommended portion size. It is there to tell you how much of the breakdown is in each serving.

Bodylastics Bands Review

I’ve had my Bodylastic resistance bands for quite awhile now. The resistance bands come in different sets. There is a basic, max tension and max tension XT set along with a couple of Strongman sets, MMA and a superhuman strength set.

I have the Bodylastics Max Tension set that comes with 5 resistance bands (yellow, green, red, blue, black), 2 heavy duty handles, ankle straps, an over the door anchor, a travel/storage bag, and an instruction manual full of exercises that can be done. My manual is printed, but it looks like the newer versions come with a DVD based manual.

WOD: Weekly Log 2-17-2013

Started a new experiment on pull-ups and dips. Going to use resistance bands in order to perform them as assisted exercises. I want to see if my strength increases on these exercises steadily this way.

While I can already do pull-ups and dips unassisted. I never really felt that they were “easy”. I also wasn’t increasing in numbers by doing those low reps for sets. I’ll be using my next couple of workouts in order to find the correct band and weight configuration.

Pre-Cook Potatoes Using A Microwave

bacon and eggs

Pre-cooked potatoes makes cooking meals easier and faster. It helps to have certain foods already cut up and prepared. That way you don’t need to do it on the spot. Let’s take potatoes for example. I know on most days I’m not in the mood to cut up a potato, when what I want to do is eat it now.

I find if I do it when I have some free time, I get it done and then just have to heat it up a little. I use potatoes in chicken soup and I like to eat them with scrambled eggs, sausauges or bacon.

I’m Too Tired To Workout, Should I Do It Anyway?

I don’t get it. You know, people who say they’re so exhausted and then try to gather up the energy to run 5 miles. Look, in my opinion if you feel tired there’s a reason. You might have worked out too hard and your body is still recovering from the workout. Did you shovel a bunch of snow? Did you not sleep well?

If you feel tired and fatigued, the body still needs to recuperate. Sure you can do a light and quick workout, just to get something in, but running for miles or lifting as heavy as you can will just dig your recovery into a deeper hole. Take an extra day off and see how you feel tomorrow.

Then, and only then, if you feel strong and ready to go should you workout. Working out while fatigued is just asking for trouble. Not just injury, but it could also lead to overeating.
