Swim Saturday 7-7-2012

monkey bars

Headed out early to pickup my friend and we headed to the pool. We arrived at 9am and it wasn’t that crowded, but by 10am it was filling up quick.

My friend doesn’t know how to swim so I was working with him trying to get him comfortable in the water. I feel it’s important to learn how to swim since you never know when you might find yourself needing to know. I also feel that the way a lot of swim programs teach students how to swim is wrong.

They start off right away trying to teach the freestyle/crawl stroke. Because of that I think a lot of people trying to learn how to swim give up, feeling that they wasted money on lessons. I also fell into that group. I gave up but then realized that any skill that can increase fun or save your or anothers life should be learned.

My friend was able to get a bit more comfortable in the water and was able to get into back balance/side position. It was great progress for him in one session and he can always go to that position to get a breath if he needs to.

Later in the day I had plenty of energy and was in the park with my nephew. He has that good ole’ fashioned upper body strength. He can swing from the  monkey bars with no problem and hang from one arm easily. I tried to hang from one arm and basically couldn’t. Can you guess what I’m going to work on now? You got it, hanging by one arm.

I did  some messing around in the park doing pullups, climbing the jungle gym and trying to do a muscle up.  Because of the heat out even that small amount of movement drained me quick.

Get out and play in a jungle gym, you’d be surprised how much it can work you out. I only wish there was an adult jungle gym around me.
