In my humble opinion the best cardio to do, for time or distance, are the ones we would need to do in the real world. I choose biking, rowing, walking and swimming.
Walking
Walking is natural. After all we do it all the time. It’s more natural to walk 3 miles than it is to jog 3 miles. Notice I said jog, not run. Running is completely natural but its better used for short times.
What do u think is more important in a zombie apocalypse, being able to jog 3 miles, or being able to run as fast as you can for 1 minute to get away from that flesh eater trying to make you its lunch.
Usually with walking it takes about 12 minutes before you start to feel your body heating up and maybe even get a little sweat going. For a lot of people that’s around the 1 mile mark.
Rowing
When was the last time you rowed an actual boat. If you’ve never done it, let me tell you it ain’t easy. Especially if you have a few people in the boat with you.
Rowing an actual boat works your whole body and it works your back like nothing else. If you ever find yourself in a boat, chances are it’s not going to be over quickly. So you will need to be able to row for quite some time.
Any rowing machine recommendations? Post in the comments…
Biking
Bikes used to actually be one of the most common forms of transportation. Sometimes people had to walk 5 miles into town. Not only was it 5 miles there, but it was also 5 miles back. But if they used a bike, they would get done faster and not be as tired.
I know today, most people only ride bikes for exercise, but if you can find a way to use it as transportation, then it will help get in some exercise without it feeling like it. If you normally drive to the quickie mart 2 miles down the road, why not try biking it instead.
You might need to get a basket for the bike, depending on how much you intend to buy.
Swimming
Swimming is another great cardio workout that uses your entire body. If you like the water, then you know its real easy for 3 hours to go by without you even noticing. Swimming different strokes is also better than just swimming one stroke.
Why? Because if you have to swim a long way to shore, if you ever find yourself in that situation, knowing multiple strokes can save your life. What if one of your arms is hurt and you can’t use it. I hope you can swim one handed.
If you don’t know how to swim, there’s no better time like the present to start. Take a look at my learn to swim pages. It’s broken down into a progression that I feel works great to get you comfortable in the water.
